Select closest electrode pair for reliable EMGdi spectra; leaves open clinical validation in diaphragm monitoring.
Effect estimate: decreased by approximately 1 Hz/mm displacement
EMGdi center frequency can be reliably measured with a multiple-array esophageal electrode by selecting the pair of electrodes closest to the diaphragm to account for muscle-to-electrode distance.
Beck et al. (1995) studied this question. Muscle-to-electrode distance was evaluated on EMGdi center frequency (CF) (decreased by approximately 1 Hz/mm displacement). Muscle-to-electrode distance strongly affected EMGdi power spectra, with center frequency decreasing by approximately 1 Hz/mm displacement away from the closest electrode pair.
