Hypothesis-generating for syncope prevention in experimental models; should not change clinical practice.
Does acetazolamide combined with hyperbaric oxygenation prevent experimentally induced syncope in healthy male subjects?
Absolute Event Rate: 33% vs 91%
Acetazolamide combined with hyperbaric oxygenation significantly reduces the occurrence of experimentally induced syncope in healthy subjects.
Kong et al. (1970) studied Experimentally induced syncope (n=7). Acetazolamide and hyperbaric oxygenation vs. Breathing room air at normal atmospheric pressure was evaluated on Occurrence of syncope during hyperventilation-Valsalva maneuver. Intravenous acetazolamide combined with hyperbaric oxygenation reduced the occurrence of experimentally induced syncope to 33% compared to 91% when breathing room air at normal atmospheric pressure.
