Provides real-world SMA care patterns in Chile; extends observational data but leaves optimal strategies with novel therapies open.

This nationwide Chilean cohort study highlights that ventilatory care for SMA type-1 remains largely based on tracheostomy, with timely access to genetic diagnosis and supportive care for the broader SMA population.
Álvarez et al. (2019) conducted a cohort in Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) (n=92). Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) was evaluated on Care status of nutritional, respiratory and skeletal conditions. In a Chilean cohort of 92 SMA patients, 69.6% of type-1 patients were tracheostomized and fed by gastrostomy, and 65% of type-2 patients received nocturnal noninvasive ventilation.
