Severe hyperbaric pressure is linked to a ~13% increase in high-frequency HRV after three days.
Why the study?
Does severe hyperbaric pressure alter autonomic nerve functions in normal volunteers?
Observational (n=16)
Does severe hyperbaric pressure alter autonomic nerve functions in normal volunteers?
Absolute Event Rate: 6.3% vs 5.6%
p-value: p=< 0.05
Severe hyperbaric pressure significantly alters autonomic nerve functions, which can be adequately evaluated by measuring heart rate variability.

Simulated deep hyperbaric exposure was associated with higher HRV; hypothesis-generating for autonomic effects in divers and requires prospective validation.
Kurita et al. (2002) conducted an observational in Healthy volunteers (n=16). Severe hyperbaric pressure vs. Basal values was evaluated on High-frequency HRV (ms2) (p=< 0.05). Severe hyperbaric pressure simulating 330 m below sea level increased high-frequency HRV from 5.6 to 6.3 ms2 (p < 0.05) and SDNNI from 77.2 to 93 ms (p < 0.05) after 3 days.
