First-trimester Starr-Edwards prosthesis insertion succeeds in severe mitral valve disease followed by an uneventful pregnancy.
Case Report (n=1)
No
This case report provides early evidence that surgical valve replacement with a Starr-Edwards prosthesis can be successfully performed during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Single-case success of first-trimester valve replacement does not change practice; leaves open need for systematic safety data in pregnant women with severe mitral disease.

From 1.2 to 3.7% of pregnant women suffer from heart disease in some form; of this number 78 to 95% of cases are rheumatic in origin (1). The purpose of the present report is to describe for the first time the successful insertion of a Starr-Edwards prosthesis during the first trimester of pregnancy in a patient with severe mitral valve disease and the subsequent management of an uneventful pregnancy.CASE REPORTA 35-year-old married woman (M. J. Warren Harthorne (1967) conducted a case report in Severe mitral valve disease during pregnancy (n=1). Insertion of a Starr-Edwards prosthesis was evaluated on Successful insertion and subsequent management of an uneventful pregnancy. Insertion of a Starr-Edwards prosthesis was successfully performed during the first trimester of pregnancy in a 35-year-old woman with severe mitral valve disease, followed by an uneventful pregnancy.
