Finite element analysis of a carotid bifurcation model predicts preferential atherosclerosis sites using flow topology.
Computational fluid dynamics using finite element analysis can model complex hemodynamics in the carotid bifurcation to predict sites prone to atherosclerosis.
May inform computational modeling of carotid disease; leaves open clinical validation before any practice implications.
Three-dimensional analysis of blood flow in the human carotid bifurcation model has been made using the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin finite element model. The primary aim of this study is to gain some insights into complex hemodynamics based on the topology theory. In addition, the preferential sites of atherosclerosis in the carotid model are predicted by virtue of the simulated critical lines.

Tsai et al. (2007) studied Atherosclerosis. Finite element analysis (streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin model) was evaluated on Three-dimensional vortical flow structure and topology to predict preferential sites of atherosclerosis. Finite element analysis of a human carotid bifurcation model predicted preferential sites of atherosclerosis by virtue of simulated critical lines and topology theory.
