Key result
POSSUM score predicts outcomes in perforative peritonitis laparotomy with 5% observed mortality.
Why the study?
Postoperative outcomes in peritonitis from hollow viscus perforation remain unpredictable, creating a need for an accurate risk scoring system to assess healthcare efficacy, prognostication, and high-risk patient selection.
Does the POSSUM scoring system accurately predict mortality and morbidity in patients with perforative peritonitis undergoing laparotomy?
Cross-Sectional (n=100)
No
Does the POSSUM scoring system accurately predict mortality and morbidity in patients with perforative peritonitis undergoing laparotomy?
The POSSUM scoring system is a useful tool for predicting morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing laparotomy for hollow viscus perforation.
May support POSSUM for risk stratification in peritonitis laparotomy; leaves open prospective validation of predictive accuracy.
BACKGROUND developing as a result of hollow viscus perforation is a common in a developing country like India. Even if the patient reaches the hospital time and is operated, the postoperative period is still unpredictable. Secondary is the consequence of contamination of the peritoneal cavity due to of a hollow viscus within the peritoneal cavity. As peritonitis following viscus perforation is a life threatening condition commonly encountered in hospital, a uniform scoring system is good to judge the efficacy of the health as well for prognostic purposes. It helps in selecting patients at high risk who require intensive management. Thus there has been a search for accurate scoring system that can be used to compare patient’s outcome. POSSUM system with its 12 physiological score and 6 operative score was used to the expected morbidity and mortality. : present study was a cross sectional study where cases diagnosed as peritonitis undergoing laparotomy in the Department of Surgery, RIMS, , Manipur, India were studied. of the 100 patients in the study, 5 died and 28 had some form of morbidity. were no patients with predicted morbidity score of less than 25. The score is 6 and maximum is 48. scoring is a good tool to predict morbidity and mortality in patients laparotomy following hollow viscus perforation provided risk is done.

L et al. (2020) conducted a cross-sectional in Perforative peritonitis (n=100). POSSUM scoring system was evaluated on Mortality and morbidity. The POSSUM scoring system was used to predict outcomes in patients with perforative peritonitis undergoing laparotomy, with an observed mortality of 5% and morbidity of 28%.
