Advancing age is linked to ~14% lower mean blood flow velocity in the MCA.

Normal blood flow velocities in basal cerebral arteries measured by transcranial Doppler sonography decrease significantly with advancing age, necessitating age-matched reference values for accurate clinical interpretation.

Age-adjusted TCD reference values may refine interpretation; cross-sectional data leave open prognostic implications.
Demirkaya et al. (2008) conducted a cross-sectional in Healthy volunteers (n=63). Advancing age (> 40 years) vs. Younger age (≤ 40 years) was evaluated on Mean velocity (V mean) of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) (p=< 0.05). Advancing age was associated with a significant decrease in blood flow velocities across all basal cerebral arteries, with mean MCA velocity dropping from 63.65 cm/sec in subjects ≤40 years to 54.7 cm/sec in those >40 years.
