Key result
Chronic alcohol abuse in ARDS is linked to ~6-fold higher plasma sE-selectin levels.
Why the study?
Does chronic alcohol abuse increase sE-selectin levels in patients with ARDS?
Cohort (n=27)
Yes
Does chronic alcohol abuse increase sE-selectin levels in patients with ARDS?
Chronic alcohol abuse is associated with elevated sE-selectin levels in ARDS patients, suggesting altered endothelial cell and alveolar-capillary barrier function.
May indicate endothelial barrier dysfunction in alcohol-exposed ARDS; leaves open sE-selectin's prognostic or therapeutic role.

Burnham et al. (2004) conducted a cohort in Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and chronic alcohol abuse (n=27). Chronic alcohol abuse vs. No history of chronic alcohol abuse was evaluated on Plasma sE-selectin levels (ng/mL) (p=<.01). Chronic alcohol abuse in ARDS patients was associated with significantly elevated sE-selectin levels in plasma (181 vs 32 ng/mL, p<.01) and bronchoalveolar lavage (1.51 vs 0.69 ng/mL, p<.002).
