System design study demonstrates automated gas leak detection and solenoid shut-off in residential pipelines, highlighting enhanced fire safety for smart cities.
In residential societies, the growing popularity of centralized natural gas pipeline networks has created major concerns regarding their safety from leaking gas that could potentially cause fire, explosion and loss of life. This paper presents an IoT-enabled automated gas leak detection and automatic shut-down of pipelines to prevent gas exposure in home environments. This includes the use of gas detection sensors, as well as the development of an electronic microcontroller to help provide both real-time monitoring of gas leaks and immediate response to any detected leaks. The system will initiate several safety measures once the detection of a gas leak exceeds the specified limit. The initial action will be to activate an alarm which draws attention to the leak, in addition to sending all residents/authorities any necessary alerts through IoT platforms. The final action is to shut down the supply of gas via the use of a solenoid valve. The system can also help locate any leaks in a residential network for quick response times and to improve maintenance habits. The use of embedded controllers with automatic decision-making provides more reliability to the system and reduces reliance on human supervision. In addition, this solution will be affordable and easily expandable, as well as being appropriate for use in smart cities.
