CNP-specific mRNA appears in rat hearts at ~1-9% of brain levels, suggesting peripheral action.
Why the study?
Previous studies suggested the expression of mRNA coding for CNP was restricted exclusively to the central nervous system.
This study demonstrates that CNP mRNA is expressed in the rat heart and immune system, suggesting peripheral sites of action beyond the central nervous system.

No clinical implications yet; leaves open peripheral CNP actions in heart and immunity for further study.
Angelika M. Vollmar (1993) studied this question. Tissue mRNA extraction and PCR vs. Brain tissue was evaluated on Relative level of CNP-mRNA in peripheral tissues compared to brain. CNP-specific mRNA was detected in rat heart and immune organs at levels of 1-9% of total brain CNP transcripts, suggesting peripheral as well as central sites of action.
