Viral exposure enhances T-cell CD95 expression without apoptosis, whereas productive infection sensitizes resistant cells to killing.
Why the study?
The functional significance of the CD95 apoptotic pathway in the context of viral infections has not been clearly elucidated.
Viral infection regulates CD95 expression and activity, suggesting the CD95 apoptotic pathway may function to eliminate virus-infected T cells.

Hypothesis-generating for CD95 in viral T-cell elimination; prospective human studies needed before any clinical consideration.
Sieg et al. (1997) studied Viral infection. Viral infection vs. Uninfected cells was evaluated on CD95 expression and susceptibility to CD95-dependent apoptosis. Exposure to viral pathogens enhanced CD95 expression in naive T lymphocytes without increasing apoptosis susceptibility, whereas productive infection sensitized normally resistant cell lines to killing.
