The Education and Outreach Network symposium at the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2026 highlighted a shift in microbiology education from content delivery towards student development. Across sessions, common themes emerged around inclusion, assessment design, employability and the translation of knowledge into practice. This commentary synthesizes these themes and argues that current educational models remain insufficiently aligned with long-term student outcomes. A systems-level, value-driven approach to curriculum design is proposed, focusing on developing not only disciplinary knowledge but also student confidence, identity and professional capability.
