Key result
Elevated uric acid linked to ~29% higher 1-year mortality per SD in T2D and CAD.
Why the study?
Studies investigating the prognostic role of uric acid in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus have given conflicting findings.
Does elevated uric acid predict 1-year all-cause mortality in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease?
Population
3705 patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and angiography-proven CAD
Comparison
Elevated uric acid levels vs lower uric acid levels

UA independently predicts 1-year mortality in T2DM with CAD; extends conflicting observational data but leaves open need for RCTs.
Cohort (n=3,705)
Does elevated uric acid predict 1-year all-cause mortality in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease?
Hazard Ratio: 1.29 (95% CI 1.12–1.48)

Elevated uric acid levels independently predict 1-year all-cause mortality in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and confirmed coronary artery disease.
Ndrepepa et al. (2012) conducted a cohort in Type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease (n=3,705). Elevated uric acid vs. Lower uric acid levels was evaluated on 1-year all-cause mortality (HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.12-1.48, p=<0.001). In patients with Type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease, elevated uric acid independently predicted 1-year all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 1.29 per SD increase; 95% CI 1.12-1.48; P<0.001).
