Key result
ACCEPT-D evaluates whether adding aspirin to simvastatin prevents major cardiovascular events in diabetes.
Why the study?
Evidence of efficacy of preventive strategies, including aspirin use, in individuals with diabetes is scant and the additive effects of aspirin and statins remain to be investigated.
Does aspirin added to simvastatin prevent major cardiovascular events in patients aged >=50 years with diabetes and no clinically manifest vascular disease?
Population
5,170 male and female individuals aged >=50 years with type 1 or type 2 diabetes treated with or candidates for statins
Comparison
Aspirin 100 mg daily plus simvastatin versus simvastatin alone
Design
Open-label randomized controlled trial

Does aspirin added to simvastatin prevent major cardiovascular events in patients aged >=50 years with diabetes and no clinically manifest vascular disease?
The ACCEPT-D trial is designed to evaluate the efficacy of low-dose aspirin added to simvastatin for the primary prevention of major cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes.
Berardis et al. (2007) conducted an RCT in Type 1 or type 2 diabetes (n=5,170). Aspirin + Simvastatin vs. Simvastatin alone was evaluated on Combined end-point of cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, and hospital admission for cardiovascular causes. The ACCEPT-D trial is a planned randomized study designed to evaluate whether adding 100 mg/day of aspirin to simvastatin prevents major cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes.
