Key result
Highest ADMA levels linked to ~67% lower odds of ApoE ε4 in hypertensive hemodialysis patients.
Why the study?
The relationship between apolipoprotein E polymorphism and asymmetric dimethylarginine levels in hypertensive patients with varying renal function was unclear.
Comparison
ApoE ε4 allele frequency according to ADMA levels across renal function groups

In hypertensive patients with severe renal impairment or on hemodialysis, the presence of the ApoE ε4 allele is associated with lower plasma ADMA levels.
Marrocos et al. (2016) conducted a cross-sectional in Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease (n=612). Highest ADMA levels (third tertile) vs. Lowest ADMA levels (first tertile) was evaluated on Frequency of ApoE ε4 allele in patients on hemodialysis (Group III) (OR 0.329, 95% CI 0.155 - 0.699, p=0.004). Among hypertensive patients on hemodialysis, the frequency of the ApoE ε4 allele was significantly lower in those with the highest levels of ADMA compared to the lowest (14.7% vs 53.3%, OR 0.329).
