Key result
Type 2 diabetes linked to ~84% higher triglyceride concentrations versus healthy controls.
Why the study?
The fasting preβ1-HDL concentration is elevated in patients with CAD, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and hemodialysis, but its status and predictive value in type 2 diabetic patients for carotid atherosclerosis were unclear.
Is preβ1-HDL concentration elevated in type 2 diabetic patients and does it predict carotid atherosclerosis?
Case-Control (n=60)
Is preβ1-HDL concentration elevated in type 2 diabetic patients and does it predict carotid atherosclerosis?
May flag carotid atherosclerosis risk in type 2 diabetes; leaves open incremental value beyond conventional markers in larger studies.

Hirayama et al. (2007) conducted a case-control in Type 2 diabetes (n=60). Type 2 diabetes vs. Healthy control subjects was evaluated on Triglyceride concentrations (p=<0.01). Type 2 diabetes was associated with significantly higher triglyceride concentrations compared to healthy controls (166.9 vs. 90.9 mg/dl, P<0.01).
