Key result
Dexamethasone cuts D1 agonist-induced ANF secretion ~50% by suppressing D1B receptor expression in rat neurons.
Why the study?
The differential modulation of dopamine receptor-mediated effects on hypothalamic atrial natriuretic factor neurons by glucocorticoids was unclear.
Population
Long-term primary cultures of neonatal rat hypothalamic cells
Comparison
Dexamethasone and corticosterone vs basal or dopamine agonists alone
Design
Preclinical in vitro study

No immediate clinical implications for ANF regulation; leaves open translation of D1B suppression to human cardiovascular research.
p-value: p=< 0.01
Glucocorticoids differentially modulate dopamine receptor-induced responsiveness of hypothalamic ANF neurons by down-regulating D1B, but not D2, receptor-mediated changes.
D. Lee (1995) studied this question. Dexamethasone vs. Control (D1 agonist alone) was evaluated on Immunoreactive ANF secretion induced by D1 agonist (p=< 0.01). Dexamethasone approximately halved immunoreactive ANF secretion induced by the D1 agonist SKF38393 (P < 0.01) by selectively suppressing D1B receptor mRNA expression in rat hypothalamic neurons.
