About two hundred cases of breast cancer have already undergone hypophysectomy, the first series being reported by Luft & Olivecrona in 1954. A favourable effect has been observed in about 50 per cent of the patients, but a final judgement of the value of the method is not yet possible, nor can it be determined which cases are suitable for the operation and which are not. This report concerns 23 hypophysectomies performed on patients with mammary cancer at the Finnish Red Cross Hospital, Helsinki. The operation was done through a frontotemporal craniotomy. After removal of the pituitary gland the sella was curetted and cauterized with Zenker solution. Some of the patients were in a very bad general condition before the operation, and other methods of treatment had proved useless in nearly all the cases.
