A 3-hour depression training program improves short-term depression management knowledge among primary care personnel.
Why the study?
Depression is highly prevalent among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus and there is a shortage of mental health professionals, necessitating task-sharing with primary care personnel for early identification and management.
Does a brief depression training program improve knowledge of depression management in T2DM among primary care personnel?
Does a brief depression training program improve knowledge of depression management in T2DM among primary care personnel?
A 3-hour brief depression training program significantly improves short-term knowledge of depression management among primary care personnel treating patients with T2DM.
Brief training may boost depression knowledge in Indian primary care; leaves open T2DM outcome impact and durability.
Depression is highly prevalent among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Given the shortage of mental health professionals, task-sharing with primary care personnel (PCP) are essential for early identification and management of depression in primary care settings. To evaluate the effectiveness of a brief depression training program (BDTP) in enhancing PCPs' knowledge of depression management in T2DM. A 3-hour module-based BDTP was conducted at primary care centers in Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Bhubaneswar. Knowledge was assessed pre- and post-training (immediately) using multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and case vignettes. Forty-nine PCPs participated. Post-training scores significantly improved across all sites, irrespective of prior mental health training. BDTP is effective in improving PCPs' short-term knowledge. Ongoing training supervision and virtual skill-based training are recommended to sustain and translate knowledge into clinical practice.

Johnson-Pradeep et al. (2026) studied Primary care personnel managing T2DM and depression (n=49). Brief depression training program (BDTP) vs. Pre-training (baseline) was evaluated on Knowledge of depression management in T2DM (assessed via MCQs and case vignettes). A 3-hour brief depression training program significantly improved short-term knowledge of depression management among 49 primary care personnel in India.
