Key result
Systemic CIED infections are linked to a ~178% higher likelihood of Staphylococcus aureus versus local infections.
Why the study?
The relationship between time after implantation and infection patterns in cardiac implantable electronic device infections has not been sufficiently investigated.
Observational (n=97)
No
Absolute Event Rate: 48.4% vs 17.4%
p-value: p=0.002
May inform timing-specific empiric therapy in CIED infections; leaves open whether patterns guide prophylaxis or device selection.
Background:Although the causative pathogens in cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infections are well known, the relationship between time after implantation and infection patterns has not been sufficiently investigated. This study investigated the microbiology and onset of CIED infections according to infection patterns.

Miyagi et al. (2021) conducted an observational in Cardiac Implantable Electrical Device (CIED) infections (n=97). Systemic CIED infection vs. Local CIED infection was evaluated on Proportion of Staphylococcus aureus as the causative pathogen (p=0.002). Systemic CIED infections were significantly more likely to be caused by Staphylococcus aureus compared to local infections (48.4% vs 17.4%, p=0.002).
