Key result
PCR analysis detects MDV in ~74% of suspected poultry flocks.
Why the study?
Marek’s disease virus serotypes associated with outbreaks in poultry flocks in South-Western Nigeria were not well characterized using molecular techniques.
Population
58 poultry flocks (pullets, broiler, turkey, duck) suspected of Marek's disease
Comparison
Detection and differentiation of MDV serotypes 1, 2, and 3 using two-step PCR
Design
Cross-sectional study using PCR on tissue samples with neoplastic lesions
Loading...
High MDV positivity in Nigerian flocks supports enhanced monitoring; leaves open serotype-specific vaccine efficacy questions.
Cross-Sectional (n=58)
The study demonstrates the presence and potential increased virulence of MDV serotypes 2 and 3 in field outbreaks of Marek's disease in Nigerian poultry flocks.
A 2022 study conducted a cross-sectional in Marek's disease (n=58). Marek's disease virus infection was evaluated on Detection of MDV serotypes 1, 2, and 3. PCR analysis of 58 poultry flocks suspected of Marek's disease revealed that 74.1% were positive for MDV, with serotypes 1, 2, and 3 detected in 65.5%, 37.9%, and 34.5% of flocks, respectively.
