Key result
Essential amino acids and tyrosine show greater brain uptake than nonessentials, reaching up to ~55%.
Why the study?
The study aimed to quantify brain uptake of radiolabeled essential and nonessential amino acids following arterial injection to understand differential uptake patterns.
Population
Rats with arterial injection of labeled amino acids
Design
Experimental study with arterial injection and brain uptake measurement

May guide amino acid strategies in neurological care; leaves open human translation from experimental uptake data.
William H. Oldendorf (1971) studied this question. 14C-labeled amino acids vs. 3H2O uptake was evaluated on Brain uptake of amino acid as a percentage of 3H2O uptake. Eighteen amino acids showed brain uptake ranging from 2.24% to 54.5% relative to 3H2O, with nutritionally essential amino acids and tyrosine taken up to a greater extent than nonessentials.
