Observational study reveals positive links between GEAR UP engagement and college enrollment in low-income Hispanic students, highlighting key pathways like FAFSA and test scores.
College access is key to upward social mobility, yet disparities in U.S. enrollment remain, particularly for low-income Hispanic students. This study examines how engagement in the federally funded GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) initiative relates to postsecondary enrollment. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) with data from low-income Hispanic high school students, we found a direct positive link between hours spent in GEAR UP activities and college enrollment. Mediation analyses further indicated that college applications, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion, and ACT scores explained this relationship. Implications for college readiness programs are discussed.
