The article discusses interpretations of the concept of "accountability" as one of the foundations of organizational management approaches and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. It justifies the need to identify a factor that enhances organizational effectiveness regardless of the management system and type of organizational structure. By comparing two different organizational management approaches, it demonstrates that a focus on employees' sense of meaning in their activities can serve as such a factor. Conclusions are drawn that approaches based on different interpretations of "accountability" can be complementary at the level of management and leadership practices, provided they are used to increase the meaningfulness of employees' activities. Prospective directions for further research in this area are outlined in the context of an integral reinterpretation of the term "accountability".
