Adjustable mitral ring reduces EROA ~80% on the beating heart in a swine model.
Why the study?
Residual mitral regurgitation after valve repair worsens clinical outcomes and postimplant adjustable mitral rings may allow reshaping of the annulus on the beating heart to correct it.
Does a postimplant adjustable mitral ring reduce residual mitral regurgitation in a swine model of severe MR?
Does a postimplant adjustable mitral ring reduce residual mitral regurgitation in a swine model of severe MR?
A novel postimplant adjustable mitral ring successfully and reversibly corrected severe mitral regurgitation on the beating heart in a swine model.

Feasibility shown in swine; human trials needed before clinical consideration.
Tozzi et al. (2013) studied Residual mitral regurgitation (n=8). Postimplant adjustable mitral ring vs. Pre-activation baseline was evaluated on Mitral regurgitation severity (vena contracta width, PISA radius, effective regurgitant orifice area). In a swine model, a postimplant adjustable mitral ring corrected severe mitral regurgitation on the beating heart, reducing effective regurgitant orifice area from 0.50 ± 0.1 to 0.1 ± 0.1 cm2.
