Long-term prophylaxis with vWF concentrates is linked to dramatically fewer annual bleeds in VWD.
Why the study?
Long-term prophylaxis in type 3 von Willebrand disease is warranted due to risk of joint hemorrhages and hemophilic arthropathy, but clinical experience is limited.
Does long-term prophylaxis with von Willebrand factor concentrates reduce the annual number of bleeds in patients with von Willebrand disease?

May support vWF prophylaxis in severe vWD; leaves open need for RCTs to confirm benefit.
Erik Berntorp (2006) conducted a cohort in von Willebrand disease (n=37). Long-term prophylaxis with plasma-derived factor concentrates containing von Willebrand factor was evaluated on Annual number of bleeds. Long-term prophylactic treatment with vWF concentrates dramatically decreased the annual number of bleeds in a cohort of 37 patients with von Willebrand disease over a median of 11 years.
