Glycaemic fluctuations and lipid imbalances drive accelerated atherosclerosis in diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Why the study?
Diabetes is characterised by accelerated atherosclerosis with widely distributed vascular lesions influenced by glycaemic fluctuations and lipid imbalances.
This review summarizes the mechanisms linking diabetes and metabolic syndrome to accelerated atherosclerosis and its macrovascular manifestations.
Diabetes is characterised by accelerated atherosclerosis with widely distributed vascular lesions. Both the risk and rate of development of these lesions are directly influenced by the glycaemic fluctuations and lipid imbalances characteristic of diabetes. This article looks at the mechanisms leading to atherosclerosis, the association of atherosclerosis with metabolic syndrome, and both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the manifestations of the macrovascular manifestations of atherosclerosis.
