Key result
Positive PF4-heparin ELISA tests are not linked to venous thrombosis after hip surgery with LMWH.
Why the study?
The clinical relevance of PF4-heparin ELISA testing and platelet count monitoring for early diagnosis of heparin-associated thrombocytopenia after hip surgery was unclear.
Does the PF4-heparin ELISA test help in the early detection of heparin-associated thrombocytopenia in patients receiving LMWH prophylaxis after hip surgery?
Observational (n=37)
Yes
Does the PF4-heparin ELISA test help in the early detection of heparin-associated thrombocytopenia in patients receiving LMWH prophylaxis after hip surgery?
The PF4-heparin ELISA test may allow for earlier and more reliable diagnosis of heparin-associated thrombocytopenia when combined with daily platelet counts.

PF4-heparin ELISA positivity showed no relation to thrombosis; leaves open its utility for early HIT detection after LMWH.
Elalamy et al. (1996) conducted an observational in Total hip replacement (n=37). Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) was evaluated on Venous thrombosis and PF4-heparin ELISA positivity. Among 37 patients receiving LMWH after hip surgery, 1 had fatal thrombocytopenia and 7 had venous thrombosis, with no relation found between positive PF4-heparin ELISA tests and thrombosis.
