The HZB SEPIA Ecosystem provides an integrated approach for managing research sample metadata, persistent identifiers, metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and research data management services at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. This presentation introduces SEPIA (Sample Essentials, Persistent Identifiers & Attributes) and the surrounding software ecosystem, including the SEPIA frontend and backend, Schema Studio, Dynamic JSON Form Renderer, Vocab Harvester, Schema Studio Utils, Python HZB RDM, and Python HZB RDM Metadata. It describes how these components work together to capture core, structural, and sample-type-specific metadata; manage versioned JSON Schemas and controlled terminology; connect samples with experiments, datasets, documents, and provenance; and generate machine-readable metadata for persistent sample landing pages and discovery services. The presentation also outlines the end-to-end metadata workflow, demonstrates the integration of the individual components, and summarizes current development priorities for SEPIA. Presented at the IT-ED Department Meeting, Wannsee, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB), 15 September 2026.
