Key result
Hyperandrogenism is not associated with altered metabolic parameters in adolescent girls with PCOS.
Why the study?
The role of hyperandrogenism in the development of metabolic syndrome and associated metabolic parameters in adolescents with PCOS was unclear.
Does hyperandrogenism influence metabolic parameters in adolescent girls with PCOS?
Population
107 adolescent girls including 54 with PCOS according to NIH criteria
Comparison
High Testosterone PCOS vs Intermediate Testosterone PCOS vs Obese Normal Testosterone vs Lean Normal Testosterone controls

Hyperandrogenism may not drive metabolic abnormalities in adolescent PCOS; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
Cross-Sectional (n=107)
Does hyperandrogenism influence metabolic parameters in adolescent girls with PCOS?
The metabolic profile in adolescent girls with PCOS appears to be unaffected by the presence or degree of hyperandrogenism.
Forrester-Dumont et al. (2012) conducted a cross-sectional in Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) (n=107). Hyperandrogenism (High/Intermediate Testosterone) vs. Normal testosterone (obese and lean controls) was evaluated on Metabolic parameters (SBP, DBP, fasting blood glucose, lipid panel, LH, FSH, prolactin). Hyperandrogenism did not significantly affect metabolic parameters, including blood pressure, fasting glucose, and lipid profiles, in adolescent girls with PCOS.
