Metastatic scalp angiosarcoma linked to severe thrombocytopenia likely driven by intratumoral platelet consumption.
Why the study?
Cutaneous angiosarcoma of the scalp complicated by thrombocytopenia during multiple metastases presents clinical challenges in diagnosis and management.
Case Report (n=1)
This case highlights that severe thrombocytopenia in advanced angiosarcoma may be caused by platelet consumption within the tumor as metastases progress.
May signal intratumoral platelet consumption in progressing angiosarcoma metastases; hypothesis-generating case report requiring prospective confirmation.

Takiguchi et al. (2015) conducted a case report in Cutaneous angiosarcoma of the scalp with thrombocytopenia (n=1). Clinical observation and multidisciplinary treatment was evaluated on Clinical course and etiology of thrombocytopenia. In a 35-year-old man with scalp angiosarcoma, severe thrombocytopenia (14,000/μL) developed alongside multiple metastases, likely due to intratumoral platelet consumption.
