Newly isolated MDPV shares ~85% sequence identity with known strains, suggesting a new avian parvovirus group.
Why the study?
Several cases of a new disease in Muscovy ducks in Pennsylvania, USA, characterized by locomotor dysfunction and high morbidity and mortality, required characterization of the etiological agent.
A novel, genetically divergent Muscovy duck parvovirus was isolated and characterized as the cause of a new disease with high morbidity and mortality in ducks in the USA.

Alerts to divergent MDPV strains in ducks; leaves open clinical relevance and need for field validation.
Poonia et al. (2006) studied New parvovirus disease in Muscovy ducks. Virus isolation and molecular characterization was evaluated on Sequence identity of the isolated virus (MDPV/PSU-31010) compared to other MDPV and GPV isolates. Molecular characterization of a newly isolated Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV/PSU-31010) revealed only 84.5% sequence identity with other MDPV isolates, suggesting a new group of avian parvoviruses.
