Key result
Ep459 reduces protein degradation and cathepsin B and L activity in infarcted canine myocardium.
Why the study?
The role of cysteine proteinases in degradation of myocardial structural proteins in infarcted tissue was unclear.

Ep459 may limit post-MI protein loss in dogs; leaves open translation to human therapy.
Does Ep459 reduce degradation of myocardial structural proteins in dogs with myocardial infarction?
Inhibition of cysteine proteinases with Ep459 reduces the degradation of myofibrillar proteins in a canine model of myocardial infarction.
Tsuchida et al. (1986) studied Myocardial infarction. Ep459 vs. Untreated group was evaluated on Degradation of cardiac structural proteins and total activity of cathepsins B and L. Treatment with Ep459 significantly reduced protein degradation and total activity of cathepsins B and L in the infarcted myocardial tissue of dogs compared to the untreated group.
