Diet plus bezafibrate is linked to a ~38% further reduction in triglycerides versus diet alone.
Why the study?
The differential effects of a triglyceride lowering diet and bezafibrate on the HDL system in patients with hypertriglyceridaemia and low HDL-cholesterol levels were unclear.
Does combined diet and bezafibrate therapy improve the HDL system and lower triglycerides in patients with hypertriglyceridaemia and low HDL-cholesterol compared to diet alone?
Does combined diet and bezafibrate therapy improve the HDL system and lower triglycerides in patients with hypertriglyceridaemia and low HDL-cholesterol compared to diet alone?
Combined diet and bezafibrate therapy significantly lowers plasma triglycerides and increases HDL-cholesterol and LPL activity in patients with hypertriglyceridemia, beyond the effects of diet alone.

Supports bezafibrate addition to diet for enhanced TG lowering and HDL elevation; leaves open clinical outcome benefits in hypertriglyceridemia.
Arnon et al. (1993) studied Mild to moderate hypertriglyceridaemia and low HDL-cholesterol levels (n=24). Combined diet plus bezafibrate therapy vs. Baseline / Diet alone was evaluated on Plasma triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol levels. Combined diet plus bezafibrate therapy caused a further 38% decrease in plasma triglycerides, a 28% increase in HDL-cholesterol, and a 47% increase in LPL activity.
