Key result
Higher MRI aortic wall enhancement predicts 3-year ischemic stroke in resistant hypertension.
Why the study?
Magnetic resonance contrast-enhanced imaging of the aortic wall may serve as a risk index for acute ischemic cerebral stroke in patients with resistant arterial hypertension.
Cohort (n=36)
Yes
May aid stroke risk stratification in resistant hypertension; leaves open need for prospective validation before clinical adoption.

Ussov et al. (2020) conducted a cohort in Resistant arterial hypertension (n=36). Aortic wall contrast enhancement on MRI (Index of Enhancement) vs. Lower index of enhancement was evaluated on Index of aortic wall enhancement (IE) in patients with vs without ischemic stroke. An aortic wall enhancement index of 1.82 or higher on contrast-enhanced MRI optimally predicted the development of ischemic stroke over 3 years in patients with resistant arterial hypertension.
