Cholesterol embolism linked to fatal intestinal perforations despite surgical resection in a single case.
Why the study?
Cholesterol crystal embolism can cause multiple small intestinal perforations with poor prognosis, but effective curative treatments are lacking and early diagnosis is critical to prevent multi-organ involvement.
Case Report (n=1)
Cholesterol crystal embolism can cause fatal multiple small intestinal perforations and liver failure, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and attention to gastrointestinal symptoms.

Kawasaki et al. (2006) conducted a case report in Cholesterol embolism causing multiple perforations of the small intestine (n=1). Extended resection of the small intestine and stoma formation was evaluated on Clinical outcome. A 76-year-old woman with cholesterol embolism developed multiple small intestinal perforations and died of hepatic failure, suture failure, and gastrointestinal bleeding after surgical resection.
