Key result
Nitric oxide donors reduce S and G2+M phase cells by ~50% in cultured rat smooth muscle.
Why the study?
The mechanism by which nitric oxide inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation through specific cell cycle progression blocks was unclear.
p-value: p=< 0.05
Nitric oxide inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation via two distinct, reversible cell cycle arrests: an immediate cGMP-independent S-phase block and a subsequent shift to a quiescent G0-like state.

NO induces G1 arrest in cultured SMC; leaves open in vivo relevance to vascular disease or therapies.
Sarkar et al. (1997) studied this question. Nitric oxide donors (S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine or S-nitrosoglutathione) was evaluated on Fraction of cells in the S and G2 + M phases (p=< 0.05). Treatment of cultured rat aortic smooth muscle cells with nitric oxide donors resulted in a 50% decrease in the fraction of cells in the S and G2 + M phases (P < 0.05).
