Key result
PRRSV infection linked to dermatitis/nephropathy syndrome pathogenesis in pigs.
Why the study?
A systemic vasculitis involving skin and kidneys in swine, termed dermatitis/nephropathy syndrome, was recently described and its pathogenesis needed further study.
Population
Twelve pigs with gross cutaneous lesions typical of dermatitis/nephropathy syndrome
Design
Observational necropsy study with morphologic, immunohistochemical, microbiologic, and epidemiologic analyses

Describes PDNS lesions in swine; leaves open etiology, pathogenesis, and herd-level interventions pending controlled studies.
Observational (n=12)
Thibault et al. (1998) conducted an observational in Dermatitis/nephropathy syndrome (systemic vasculitis) (n=12). Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection was evaluated on Morphologic, immunohistochemical, microbiologic, and epidemiologic characteristics. PRRSV RNA was demonstrated in lung and spleen homogenates from all 12 pigs with dermatitis/nephropathy syndrome, suggesting PRRSV infection may play a role in its pathogenesis.
