Thrombomodulin Ala455Val point mutation shows no association with pre-eclampsia.
Why the study?
The association between the thrombomodulin Ala455Val mutation and pre-eclampsia remains controversial.
Does the Thrombomodulin Ala455Val point mutation predict pre-eclampsia in Australian and New Zealand women?
Observational (n=280)
Yes
Does the Thrombomodulin Ala455Val point mutation predict pre-eclampsia in Australian and New Zealand women?
The Thrombomodulin Ala455Val mutation is not a significant predictor of pre-eclampsia in Australian and New Zealand women.
Ala455Val variant shows no pre-eclampsia link; leaves open other genetic factors and should not guide screening.
Thrombomodulin plays an important role in thromboresistance. A common mutation of the gene at amino acid 455 producing valine instead of alanine has been implicated as being a risk factor in myocardial infarction and chronic heart disease. However, its link with pre-eclampsia remains controversial. This report explores the Ala455Val point mutation in 280 women as a predictor of pre-eclampsia with the conclusion that in this regard, the dimorphism is essentially neutral.

Borg et al. (2002) conducted an observational in Pre-eclampsia (n=280). Thrombomodulin Ala455Val point mutation was evaluated on Pre-eclampsia. The thrombomodulin Ala455Val point mutation was found to be essentially neutral as a predictor of pre-eclampsia in a study of 280 Australian and New Zealand women.
