Adrenocortical steroids linked to clinical deterioration and fluid retention in ~56% of uncomplicated CHF patients.
Why the study?
The effects of adrenocortical steroids on clinical and cardiodynamic status in patients with congestive heart failure were not well characterized.
Do adrenocortical steroids affect clinical and cardiodynamic status in adults with congestive heart failure?

Cautions against steroid use in uncomplicated HF; Level 5 data leaves open need for controlled trials.
Greene et al. (1960) studied Congestive heart failure (n=9). Adrenocortical steroids (prednisone or triamcinolone) vs. Baseline (steady clinical state) was evaluated on Clinical and cardiodynamic status. Adrenocortical steroids administered for 13 to 16 days were generally detrimental in uncomplicated congestive heart failure, causing clinical deterioration and fluid retention in 5 of 9 patients.
