Ventricular pacing is linked to abnormal SA-ECGs in ~50% of older children with complete heart block.
Why the study?
The utility of signal-averaged electrocardiographic late potentials to predict ventricular arrhythmias during intrinsic rhythm and ventricular pacing in children with complete heart block was unclear.
Does signal-averaged electrocardiography detect late potentials during intrinsic rhythm and ventricular pacing in children with complete heart block?

Does signal-averaged electrocardiography detect late potentials during intrinsic rhythm and ventricular pacing in children with complete heart block?
SA-ECG can detect late potentials in children with complete heart block, and recording during both intrinsic rhythm and ventricular pacing may help identify ideal pacing sites to prevent ventricular arrhythmias.

May support late potential detection during pacing in older children with complete heart block; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
Hayabuchi et al. (1994) conducted an observational in Complete heart block (CHB) (n=8). Ventricular pacing vs. Intrinsic cardiac rhythm was evaluated on Abnormalities of signal-averaged electrocardiographic (SA-ECG) late potentials. Abnormal signal-averaged electrocardiograms were detected in 4 of 8 children with complete heart block, all of whom were older than 14 years, with changes observed during ventricular pacing.
