MitraClip enables bridge to recovery in a young cardiogenic shock patient on ECMO support.
Why the study?
There is limited evidence supporting transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair for mitral regurgitation in patients with cardiogenic shock, especially with mechanical circulatory support.
Case Report (n=1)
Transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair may be a feasible bridge to recovery for patients with severe mitral regurgitation and cardiogenic shock requiring ECMO.
May support MitraClip as bridge in ECMO shock; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
Currently, there is limited evidence supporting the use of transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair for mitral regurgitation in patients with cardiogenic shock. Moreover, the evidence is even scarcer when considering the application of this intervention in the context of mechanical circulatory support. Here, we present a successful case of a MitraClip implantation as a bridge to recovery in a young patient with cardiogenic shock secondary to acute organic mitral valve regurgitation and severe left ventricular dysfunction that required ECMO support. A detailed description of the procedure is provided.

Licciardi et al. (2025) conducted a case report in Cardiogenic shock secondary to acute organic mitral valve regurgitation and severe left ventricular dysfunction requiring ECMO support (n=1). Transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (MitraClip) was evaluated on Bridge to recovery. MitraClip implantation was successfully used as a bridge to recovery in a young patient with cardiogenic shock, severe left ventricular dysfunction, and ECMO support.
