The presence of constitutive heterochromatin on the Z and W chromosomes of four Leporinus species (L. elongatus, L. ohtusidens, L. reinhardti, and Leporinus sp.) was studied by C -banding. A hypothetical role of the heterochromatin in the differentiation of the sex determination system in these fishes is proposed.
