Key result
Higher Caprini score linked to ~180% increased postoperative VTE risk in lung cancer patients.
Why the study?
The relationship of Caprini score with the incidence of postoperative venous thromboembolism among lung cancer patients remains uncertain.
Does a higher Caprini score predict postoperative venous thromboembolism in lung cancer patients?
Meta-Analysis (n=4,215)
Does a higher Caprini score predict postoperative venous thromboembolism in lung cancer patients?
Odds Ratio: 2.8 (95% CI 2.04–3.84)

An elevated Caprini score is a significant predictor of postoperative venous thromboembolism in patients with lung cancer.
May inform VTE risk stratification after lung cancer surgery; leaves open prospective validation of Caprini-guided prophylaxis.
The relationship of Caprini score with the incidence of postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) among lung cancer patients remains uncertain now. This study aimed to identify the effect of Caprini score in predicting postoperative VTE in lung cancer. Several databases were searched up to April 11, 2025. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined and subgroup analyses by tumor type and surgery type were performed. All statistical analysis were conducted using the STATA 17.0 software. Fifteen studies were included, with the incidence rate of postoperative VTE of 11.86% (500/4215). Pooled results demonstrated that higher Caprini score was significantly associated with increased risk of VTE (OR=2.80, 95% CI: 2.04-3.84, P<0.001). For deep vein thrombosis (DVT), elevated Caprini score was also a significant predictor (OR=1.72, 95% CI: 1.09-2.71, P=0.020). Then subgroup based the types of tumor and surgery further verified above findings. Caprini score was significantly related to the risk of postoperative VTE in lung cancer and patients with an elevated Caprini score predicted higher incidence of VTE.

Che et al. (2025) conducted a meta-analysis in Lung cancer (n=4,215). Higher Caprini score vs. Lower Caprini score was evaluated on Postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) (OR 2.80, 95% CI 2.04-3.84, p=<0.001). A higher Caprini score was significantly associated with an increased risk of postoperative venous thromboembolism in lung cancer patients (OR 2.80; 95% CI 2.04-3.84; P<0.001).
