Late-stage sepsis selectively stimulates cardiac type I PKA activity by ~80% in rats.
Why the study?
The changes in protein kinase A activity in rat heart during different cardiodynamic phases of sepsis were not well characterized.
Type I PKA is activated in the rat heart during the late hypodynamic phase of sepsis, which may contribute to altered myocardial function.

Hypothesis-generating for PKA-mediated myocardial changes in late sepsis; human studies needed before any clinical translation.
Yang et al. (1997) studied Sepsis. Late phase of sepsis (18 h post-cecal ligation and puncture) vs. Control and early sepsis (9 h) was evaluated on Type I and type II protein kinase A (PKA) activities. During the late hypodynamic phase of sepsis in rats, type I PKA activity was stimulated by 66.7-97.7%, while type II PKA activity remained constant.
