Key result
High molecular weight adiponectin levels are ~54% lower in men than women and track with BNP.
Why the study?
Clinical data on high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin and its clinical significance for vascular protection are lacking.
Cross-Sectional (n=1,183)
No
Absolute Event Rate: 2.6% vs 5.7%
p-value: p=<0.001
HMW adiponectin levels are lower in men than women and independently associate with BNP and metabolic parameters in a general Japanese population.

HMW adiponectin assessment may refine metabolic risk evaluation in Japanese residents; leaves open incremental vascular prognostic value versus total adiponectin.
Fujimatsu et al. (2009) conducted a cross-sectional in General population (n=1,183). Male sex vs. Female sex was evaluated on Median plasma level of high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin (p=<0.001). Median plasma levels of high molecular weight adiponectin were significantly lower in men compared to women (2.6 vs 5.7 μg/mL, p<0.001) and were independently associated with B-type natriuretic peptide, body weight, and HDL cholesterol.
