Key result
Ruthenium red slows mitochondrial oxygen consumption response time by ~75% vs control.
Why the study?
The effect of regulation of mitochondrial dehydrogenase activities on the mean response time of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in cardiac tissue was investigated to understand adaptation to ATP demand.
Absolute Event Rate: 20.7% vs 11.8%
Strong blockade of mitochondrial calcium uptake increases the mean response time of mitochondrial oxygen consumption, while pyruvate decreases it, highlighting the role of mitochondrial dehydrogenase activities in metabolic adaptation.

Should not inform clinical decisions on cardiac energetics; leaves open mitochondrial calcium's role in metabolic adaptation pending higher-level validation.
Hak et al. (1993) studied this question. Ruthenium red and pyruvate vs. Control and glucose was evaluated on Mean response time of mitochondrial oxygen consumption. Perfusion with 2.1 micrograms/ml ruthenium red increased the mean response time of mitochondrial oxygen consumption to 20.7 s vs 11.8 s in control, while pyruvate decreased it to 10.0 s vs 11.9 s.
