Muscarinic M3 receptors mediate both inositol phosphate formation and contractile responses.
Why the study?
The specific muscarinic receptor subtypes mediating phosphoinositide hydrolysis and contraction in guinea pig ileal smooth muscle were not fully characterized.
In guinea pig ileum, both phosphoinositide hydrolysis and contractile responses to muscarinic agonists are mediated primarily by the M3 receptor subtype.

May guide M3 antagonist development; leaves open human GI motility relevance.
Yamagishi et al. (1993) studied this question. Muscarinic antagonists was evaluated on IP formation and contractile response. Muscarinic antagonists demonstrated that both IP formation and the contractile response induced by muscarinic agonists are mediated through the muscarinic M3 subtype in guinea pig ileum.
