Key result
Contrast echocardiography differentiates pericardial effusion mass from left atrial appendage thrombus.
Why the study?
Differentiating between intraatrial thrombus and fibrinous material in pericardial effusion can be challenging with standard echocardiography.
Comparison
Contrast-enhanced echocardiography vs standard transesophageal echocardiography

Additional TEE views distinguish pericardial effusion from LAA thrombus; leaves open need for standardized multiplane protocols.
Case Report (n=1)
Contrast-enhanced echocardiography is a useful tool for clearly delineating endocardial boundaries when fibrinous material in a pericardial effusion mimics a left atrial appendage thrombus.
Skolnick et al. (2008) conducted a case report in Acute cerebrovascular infarct and pericardial effusion (n=1). Contrast-enhanced echocardiography (Definity) was evaluated on Delineation of the boundaries of the endocardium. Contrast-enhanced echocardiography successfully delineated the endocardium boundaries, confirming that an echogenic mass was in a pericardial effusion rather than the left atrial appendage.
